Library Collection Vision

The library collection at Birranga College is intentionally curated to be contemporary, inclusive and responsive to the needs and interests of our students. We prioritise quality over quantity, investing in books that students genuinely want to read rather than simply acquiring large numbers of free or donated titles. While donated books have a place, our borrowing data consistently shows that students choose new, relevant and engaging resources that reflect their lives, interests and identities.

Student voice is central to our collection development. Many of our purchases come directly from student recommendations and requests, fostering a strong sense of ownership and ensuring the collection remains relevant. This approach is reflected in high circulation rates and regular evidence of reluctant readers discovering books they are excited to borrow.

Our collection embraces a wide range of formats, genres and perspectives, ensuring every student can see themselves, their experiences and their interests represented. We reject outdated ideas of the school library as a quiet warehouse of books and instead cultivate a vibrant, welcoming space where reading is accessible, enjoyable and valued by all.

A well-resourced library budget is essential to sustaining this vision. Investment in high-quality, current resources directly supports student engagement with reading, promotes literacy, and builds a library collection that continues to serve the evolving needs of our school community.
