At Birranga College we are committed to providing rigor and challenge in our curriculum. This will occur within each classroom but also in extra-curricular activities. Whilst we will not have a SEAL program, we will have a targeted approach to accelerate the learning of students as well as a Challenge and Enrichment program designed to prepare students for a world that is rapidly evolving.
Students need more than just content knowledge — they need the ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and adapt to new challenges. The Challenge and Enrichment Program has been developed to equip students with the cognitive tools and collaborative experiences that will help them thrive in the future world of work.
Students are at the centre of everything we do at Birranga College. Our vision and values play a key role in decision making where we have our students at the core and where we look to ensure that they share with us a passion for life-long learning. It is our role as educators to create an environment where all students experience success, grow as learners, generate their own pathway and become community members we are proud of.
Staff develop engaging and challenging learning programs and create the optimal conditions for student learning, including supporting parents/careers as first educators and partners in education. Teachers model lifelong learning as they build reflection and deep levels of thinking into their practice and challenge themselves and their students to co-construct and apply new knowledge. Our teachers are also in step with the latest research, regularly updating their teaching and learning programs to align with contemporary evidence about how students learn.
Our Teaching model of instruction includes key recommendations from the Australia Educational Research Organisation (AERO) on how students best learn and how we as schools can create this optimal learning environment. Our lessons and curriculum planning are based around the VTLM which see our students:

The curriculum in the Junior School is a broad and comprehensive academic program based on the Victorian Curriculum F–10. It is structured to ensure students are exposed to a wide range of subjects and have the opportunity to sample every subject we offer at entry level. The College runs on a 10 day timetable. We focus on developing their capabilities in:
At Year 7 students complete over the course of the year subjects tat align themselves with the Vic Curric 2.0 where student learning is about experience and opportunity in trying new experiences in learning. Over a fortnightly period students in Year 7 will undertake
We also have a robust elective program
We support a wide range of opportunities for students to flourish as learners and individuals so they can achieve their desired pathways, including through applied learning. Literacy and Numeracy skills are embedded across all domains and curriculum maps. Equally we know that education expands beyond the realms of academic achievement and we actively include social and emotional learning across all disciplines. Our Pastoral Care Program – PEARL – supports students’ personal, social, and emotional growth alongside their academic learning. It equips them with skills such as resilience, emotional regulation, goal setting, and positive help-seeking. Students develop an understanding of how to live our school values, build strong relationships, and reflect on their progress to set future goals. The program develops confident, organised, and well-rounded young people ready to thrive at school and beyond.
We are committed as staff to ensure that our teaching and learning programs supports our college vision of cultivating compassionate hearts, curious minds, confident leaders.
