Wellbeing & Engagment

Student Wellbeing & Engagement at Birranga College

At Birranga College, we are committed to supporting the holistic development of every student. We recognise that wellbeing is foundational to academic success, personal growth and positive engagement in school life. Our approach is goal-centred and solution-focused, creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where all students feel valued, connected and empowered to belong.

We implement a tiered model of student engagement and wellbeing to ensure support is responsive to individual needs. This framework strengthens students’ help-seeking skills, builds family partnerships and promotes shared responsibility for wellbeing across our community.

Our wellbeing practices are also informed by best-practice principles of disability inclusion. Where students have additional learning or support needs, we work in partnership with families and external professionals to ensure that supports are tailored, respectful and enable full participation in school life.

The PEARL Program

Our PEARL (People Engaged to Aspire, Reflect and Lead) program proactively supports student wellbeing and engagement. Through PEARL, students develop personal, social and emotional capabilities alongside their academic learning.

The program builds skills in resilience, emotional regulation, goal setting and positive help-seeking. Students connect with our school values, build strong relationships and reflect on their progress to set meaningful goals. PEARL supports the development of confident, organised and well-rounded young people who are equipped to thrive at school and beyond.

Our Tiered Approach to Wellbeing & Engagement

Tier 1 – Universal Support

All students benefit from proactive and preventative wellbeing strategies embedded across the college. These include:

  • The PEARL program
  • Respectful Relationships curriculum
  • Sub-school wellbeing leaders
  • Bullying prevention initiatives
  • Whole-school awareness days
  • Community engagement activities

These universal supports foster belonging, positive connection and ongoing wellbeing for every student.

Tier 2 – Targeted Support

Some students may require additional support at certain times. Targeted interventions are provided based on identified needs and may include small group programs such as social skills development, conflict resolution support or health education.

Tier 3 – Intensive Support

Where more significant or complex challenges arise, intensive and individualised support is offered in partnership with families and, where appropriate, external professionals.

Parents, carers and students are encouraged to contact their PEARL teacher or Year Level Co-Ordinator if wellbeing support would be beneficial. Together, we will determine the most appropriate support pathway. Where required, Birranga College will also connect families with relevant community-based services to ensure comprehensive care.

We want every student to feel a sense of belonging, connection and purpose at Birranga – and to know they are supported to learn, grow and succeed.

Should you require more information regarding supports please email birranga.co@education.vic.gov.au OR contact your child’s PEARL teacher.
